Kenya Civil Aviation Clearance: (Wind power projects only)

Potential generators of energy from wind resources must obtain a permit for each mast/turbine to be erected from the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority. The Authority is located at the Kenyatta International Airport of Nairobi. The duration of the procedure depends very much on the location of the windmills due to the obligatory onsite inspection.


  • Purpose: Air navigation and safety
  • Application Fee: None
  • Clearance Fee: Inspection and approval per site - Nairobi Kshs. 15,000. Outside Nairobi Area Kshs. 40,000. See additional charges applicable per number of wind turbines
  • Maximum Processing Time: Depending on location - Minimum 14 days. But due to consultations with other relevant aviation stakeholders it may go to 60 days
  • Validity: Indefinite
  • Clearance Type: Approval
  • Legal Basis: Kenya Civil Aviation Act 2013, Kenya Civil Aviation Manual of Aerodromes Standards 2013
  • Annual Renewal: The approval is not renewable. Refer to the "Charges for Air Navigation Services and Regulatory Fees" attached downloadable for more charges on an annual basis
